Transport Canada closes two defect investigations regarding unintended acceleration in Toyota and Lexus vehicles and timeliness of Toyota's reporting of the sticking accelerator pedal defect

There are currently no open or active investigations into Toyota, Lexus or Scion vehicles

We are pleased to inform you that Transport Canada has closed its two investigations related to Toyota - the unintended acceleration in Toyota and Lexus vehicles and the timeliness of Toyota's reporting of the sticking accelerator pedal defect. Regarding Transport Canada's review of unintended acceleration, the agency reported that "an analysis was performed of all of the 374 complaints of unintended acceleration in Toyota and Lexus vehicles that were received from September 2009 to June 2011." After conducting "detailed vehicle and collision scene examinations" in 74 cases, downloading event data recorders in 41 of the cases where that was possible, and analyzing pre-crash data, Transport Canada found that "some of the incidents of unintended acceleration appeared to be the result of driver pedal misapplication, and others due to the use of incompatible or improperly secured floor mats that interfered with the accelerator pedal."

Similar to what was found by the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the United States, Transport Canada concluded that there was "no vehicle-related issue, other than sticking accelerator pedals and interference by floor mats," which were addressed through recalls.

As for the review of the timeliness of Toyota's reporting of the sticking accelerator pedal defect, Transport Canada reviewed over 60,000 pages of internal documents provided by TMMC and TCI and found "no evidence of non-compliance with the Motor Vehicle Safety Act."

Following the closure of these two investigations, there are currently no open defect investigations into Toyota, Lexus or Scion vehicles. For more information, visit the relevant pages on Transport Canada's new defect investigation website that was launched on September 9, 2011.
